Before Raelynn’s family arrived at the studio last week I tried to think about what her mom might be thinking.
“I just want to make sure she’s going to be okay. Is this safe?”
I’ve been a photographer for over twelve years. I’ve also been a Labor and Delivery nurse and childbirth educator. And in all that time, that question — some version of it — has come from almost every single mother before a newborn session.
It is the right question to ask. And if you’re searching for Worthington Ohio newborn photography and you’re wondering the same thing, this post is my answer.
Raelynn arrived at Seedlings Studios at eleven days old — calm, sleepy, and completely unaware of how thoroughly she had rearranged her family’s world.
Her toddler big brother leaned over her with the careful, reverent attention that only small children manage. Her dad held her the way new fathers do: still adjusting to the weight of her, still learning that she was real. Her mom watched all of it with the expression I have seen on the faces of new mothers a hundred times. Full. Overwhelmed. Grateful beyond words.
These are the images that end up on walls. The ones that stop you mid-hallway five years from now, because you forgot — just briefly — how small she once was.

When Raelynn’s mom asked whether her daughter would be okay, here is what I was able to tell her — honestly, and from experience.
The studio was already warm when they arrived. Newborns cannot regulate their own body temperature — this is well-established in paediatric guidance, including recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics on safe infant environments. My studio runs warmer than most homes. That warmth is the reason babies relax, settle, and sleep deeply enough for the images we both hope to make. It is not an accident. It is nursing knowledge applied directly to photography.
We fed on demand, not on a session schedule. Raelynn ate during our time together. We stopped completely — lights dimmed, space given, no rushing. A full baby is a sleeping baby. A sleeping baby makes art. Rushing a feed to stay on schedule is something I will never do.
No pose was ever forced. Every transition was assessed before we moved into it. I know the difference between a baby who is comfortable and a baby who is tolerating something. That knowledge came from nursing. It is not something you develop by photographing beautiful babies — it is something you develop by understanding how their bodies actually work.
The parents were cared for too. Raelynn’s mom and dad arrived carrying the particular alertness of new parenthood. Part of my role — the part that traces most directly back to the L&D ward — is making sure the whole family feels safe and unhurried from the moment they walk in. When parents relax, babies relax.

There are talented photographers across Columbus and Central Ohio making beautiful work every week. What I’d gently encourage every expecting parent to ask — beyond do I love their images? — is: do I trust this person with my newborn?
The images matter deeply. They are the reason you book. But the experience — the safety, the calm, the feeling that your baby is in expert hands — that is what you will remember when you look at those images twenty years from now.
At Seedlings Studios, the L&D nursing background is not a marketing detail. It is the foundation of how I work.

Seedlings Studios is located in the heart of historic downtown Worthington — one of Central Ohio’s most beautifully preserved communities, founded in 1803 and known for its brick-lined streets, village green, and deeply rooted neighborhood character.
It is a fitting place to make art about beginnings.
The studio is designed with natural light, curated wraps and props, and a palette of terracotta, linen, and sage that feels timeless rather than trendy. When you look at your images in five, ten, or twenty years, they won’t feel dated. They’ll feel exactly like the beginning — because that’s what they are.
Worthington is a wonderful community to explore before or after your session. If you’re coming in from Columbus or the surrounding area, Experience Worthington is a lovely resource for discovering what the area has to offer.
When is the best time to schedule a newborn photography session? The optimal window is five to fourteen days after birth. During this time, babies are at their most flexible and most deeply sleepy — ideal conditions for the curled, peaceful poses of fine art newborn photography. I recommend booking during your second trimester so your session is held around your due date, with flexibility for early or late arrivals.
How long does a newborn session take? Most sessions run two to three hours, sometimes longer. There is no clock pressuring us. We feed on demand, take breaks, and let your baby lead. You will never feel rushed at Seedlings Studios.
What should I bring to my newborn session in Worthington Ohio? Bring your feeding supplies — breast or bottle, whatever you use. Bring a pacifier if your baby takes one. Bring a change of clothes for yourself. Everything else — wraps, props, backdrops — is provided at the studio.
Is newborn photography safe? Yes — when it is done by someone who understands newborn anatomy and physiology. As a former L&D nurse, I approach every session with safety as the first consideration. No pose is forced. The studio is kept warm. Feeds are never rushed. Your baby is always the priority.
How far in advance should I book a Columbus newborn photographer? Ideally, during your second trimester. This ensures your preferred dates are held and gives you one less thing to think about in those final weeks. I hold your due date and build flexibility around it.
Do you serve areas outside of Worthington, Ohio? Yes. Seedlings Studios serves Worthington, Columbus, Dublin, Powell, and the greater Central Ohio area. The studio is located in historic downtown Worthington with easy access from across Columbus.
What do clients receive after their newborn session? Every family leaves their Seedlings session with a custom heirloom art piece made for their home — not a digital gallery or a USB drive. We believe memories belong on walls, not in folders.
Spring and summer sessions are now filling. I would love to hear about your growing family.
